Kavita says audiology is more than just a hearing test!

The most significant advances in hearing loss prevention and treatment, came only in the last few decades with the invention of assistive listening devices, cochlear implants, and other amplification aids. However, there is still a large portion of our community not taking advantage of good hearing health.

At Can:Do Hearing we are resolute in our commitment to encouraging everyone to fully understand and access the services which are made available to our community. And now with Medicare rebates available via a GP referral, the barriers to good hearing health have been significantly reduced!

Hearing aids are not the only solution when it comes to hearing and communication. While modern hearing devices have sophisticated technology to improve the clarity of speech, they will never quite return your hearing to ‘normal’. Using good communication strategies and tactics will help to maximise your ability to reconnect with others.

Can:Do Hearing’s Senior Audiologist, Kavita Mascarenhas says, "Audiology can be more than just a hearing test. It can also be the support for accepting a change in one of your senses and how it's performing. People may not realise their own hearing loss, and denial of a hearing problem may lead to reluctance to use hearing aids. On the flip side, not all hearing problems need to be resolved with a hearing aid."

Untreated hearing loss can have a terrible effect on a person’s education, communication, productivity, social engagement, physical and mental wellbeing, and the Deafness Forum Australia have shared that people from culturally and ethnically diverse (CALD) communities are more likely to experience hearing loss and less likely to access hearing services. In the UK hearing loss is 5 times more common among people in CALD communities and their use of hearing services and hearing aids was 50% lower, compared to those with white British background. Similar inequalities can exist in Australia.

Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with 30% of people born overseas. 20% of people speak a language other than English at home. Hearing health inequality related to CALD background is therefore a major challenge.

When we lose our hearing, we lose the ability to keep in touch with friends, family and the wider world. But we know the needs of various CALD communities and individuals can vary considerably. At Can:Do Hearing a lot has changed since our early days, however one thing has remained the same: our can do attitude.
