Hearing health is an essential aspect of overall well-being, and it is important to take care of our ears and hearing, even from a young age.

As an employer, mother, entrepreneur, daughter, fitness lover, sister, wife, Lucy Cornes is a busy person. Maintaining her health and wellbeing are integral to who she is and we’ve personally witnessed her dedication to her family over the years.

She had noticed her dad's disconnection from conversations when the family were at loud restaurants.

She says, “my dad suffered a hearing loss on the job as an aircraft engineer.”

Aircraft engineers are frequently exposed to loud noises from aircraft engines and machinery; however, these days they will typically wear proper hearing protection.

It’s her wish for her dad, who now suffers from hearing loss, that he stays socially connected and feels included. In fact, it’s a wish she has for all, especially as she now understands that some hearing loss can be prevented. Our ears are responsible for receiving and processing sound, which enables us to communicate with others, enjoy music and nature, and stay aware of our surroundings. It is important to understand how we can maintain our hearing health and prevent damage to our ears.

Like her dad’s story, one of the most significant risks to our hearing health is exposure to loud noise.

Loud noise can damage the sensitive hair cells in our ears, which are responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals that our brain can interpret. This damage is irreversible and can lead to hearing loss. Therefore, it is crucial to protect our ears from loud noise by wearing earplugs or earmuffs when we at concerts or sporting events (for example).

Another way to maintain our hearing health is to avoid using cotton swabs to clean our ears. While it may be tempting to use a cotton swab to clean out excess earwax, doing so can actually push the wax further into our ear canal, potentially causing damage. Instead, it is best to let our bodies naturally remove earwax, or to see an Audiologist and have them do it for you.

If we do experience hearing loss or other hearing-related issues, early detection can lead to better treatment options and prevent further damage.

Lucy recommends, “Please go and get the (hearing) test. I want my dad to look after his hearing health so that he stays socially connected and feels included. But I want the same for you too.“
