6 steps to wax on, wax off

Or expressed another way, to wax on and wax off is to learn something important as a by-product of doing something that is partially or completely unrelated.

You may consider wax management as being unrelated to hearing health, however we at Can:Do Hearing believe it is very much part of the process. So, before your wax management appointment, there are 6 things you can do to “wax on and wax off”.

Confirm/Book your appointment

Make sure you have a scheduled appointment with the audiologist for wax removal. It's best to have a professional perform this procedure to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the removal. At Can:Do Hearing you can book in person, over the phone by calling 08 8100 8209 or online at candohearing.com.au/booknow

Understand the process

We ask that you use wax drops or wax spray for a couple of days before your appointment. This makes the wax much easier to remove. You will receive a questionnaire about your ear health in the lead up to your appointment. Please fill it in and send it back so that your audiologist knows to take any extra precautions during your wax removal.

Do not insert anything into your ear

It's crucial to avoid inserting cotton swabs, bobby pins, or any other objects into your ears. While you may be tempted to remove the wax yourself, this can push it deeper into the ear canal or potentially cause damage.

Administer ear drops as directed

Carefully follow the recommended instructions for ear drop/spray application. For drops, typically you will tilt your head to one side, pull the outer ear upward and backward, and then place the recommended number of drops into the ear canal. Stay in that position for minute or as directed on the instructions. For wax sprays you can stay upright and squirt the spray into your ear canal. If any liquid runs out of your ears, place some tissue or cotton wool on the outside of your ear to absorb the overflow. DO NOT push the tissue/wool into your ear canal.

Keep the ear drops in

After applying the ear drops, it's essential to let them work for the recommended amount of time. This allows the drops to soften the wax and facilitate easier removal. Avoid touching or scratching your ears during this period.

Arrive at your appointment on time

Ensure that you arrive at your scheduled appointment on time or a few minutes early. This allows the audiologist to proceed with the wax removal process without any unnecessary delays.

By following these steps, you can help prepare yourself for a successful wax removal appointment with an audiologist.

Remember, it's always best to consult with a professional when it comes to the removal of earwax to avoid potential complications or injuries.
